It’s a moment every Windows user dreads: you’re in the middle of work, and suddenly your screen turns solid blue with a bunch of white text. No warning, no save option—just crash. That, folks, is the infamous Blue Screen of Death (BSOD).
Here at AS Computer Solutions in Onoway, we get it. A BSOD can feel like a total disaster.
But don’t worry—most of the time, it’s not the end of the world (or your PC). It’s just Windows saying, “Something went wrong, and I had to stop to protect your system.”
Let’s walk you through what causes a BSOD, how to troubleshoot it, and when to give us a call.
💥 What Is a BSOD, Really?
A BSOD means Windows hit a critical error it couldn’t recover from, so it shut down to prevent damage. It’s serious, yes—but also a helpful warning sign.
Common Causes:
🧠 Faulty Hardware – Bad RAM, overheating, failing hard drives, or graphics card issues⚙️ Driver Issues – Corrupt or incompatible drivers (especially after updates or hardware changes)💻 Software Conflicts – Antivirus or system utilities sometimes clash with Windows🦠 Malware – Viruses can mess with system files and trigger BSODs📂 Corrupted Windows Files – From power outages, disk errors, or bad shutdowns
🛠️ Step 1: Take Note of What You See
Before the computer restarts (it often does this on its own), jot down:
- The Stop Code (e.g., DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, 0x00000124)
- Any File Name mentioned (e.g., ntoskrnl.exe, nvlddmkm.sys)
- The Error Message (e.g., MEMORY_MANAGEMENT, SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION)
📸 TIP: Snap a quick photo with your phone—just in case it restarts too quickly.
🔄 Step 2: Let the System Reboot
✅ If it boots up normally: Great! But don’t ignore it—this could be a warning sign.🚫 If it keeps crashing or won’t boot: Things are more serious. Time to dig deeper or try Safe Mode (more on that below).
🔍 Step 3: Investigate the Cause
Ask yourself:🧩 Did you recently install new hardware?⬆️ Update any drivers?🆕 Install new software?⚠️ Run a Windows update?💥 Drop your laptop or jostle your desktop?
Now take that Stop Code or error message, and Google it. You’ll likely find forum threads or Microsoft articles explaining what it means and how to fix it.
🧰 Step 4: Try These Common Fixes
Here are some of the most effective troubleshooting steps:
🚗 Update or Roll Back Drivers
If a driver caused the crash:
- Open Device Manager (right-click Start button → select it)
- Right-click the device (like your graphics card), then choose:
- “Update driver” OR
- “Uninstall device” → reboot → Windows reinstalls it
🧠 Run Memory Diagnostics
RAM issues are a top BSOD cause.
- Search for “Windows Memory Diagnostic” in the Start menu
- Let it run its full test (can take a while)
💽 Check the Hard Drive
Failing drives can crash your system.
- Open Command Prompt as Administrator
- Type chkdsk /f /r → press Enter
- Restart your PC so it can scan and fix errors
🦠 Scan for Malware
Viruses can wreak havoc on system files.
- Run a full antivirus scan
- If you don’t have antivirus, try a reliable one like Bitdefender or Emsisoft
🕰️ Use System Restore
If the BSOD started recently:
- Search “System Restore” in Windows
- Pick a restore point from before the problem started
🧯 Boot into Safe Mode
If your PC crashes constantly:
- Hold Shift while clicking Restart
- Choose Troubleshoot → Advanced Options → Startup Settings
- Select Enable Safe Mode
In Safe Mode, you can remove problem drivers or software safely.
